Title: Equilibria and stability in Vlasov-Maxwell equation
Speaker: Zhiyuan Zhang
Bio: Dr. Zhiyuan Zhang is a Courant Instructor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. Before coming to Courant, she was a graduate student at Brown University under the advisement of Walter A. Strauss. She is interested in a wide variety of PDE models, especially kinetic theory, fluid models as well as dispersive equations.
Abstract: We present results on the existence and stability of equilibria (time-independent solutions) of the Vlasov-Maxwell equation. In particular, linear stability criteria for certain classes of equilibria are discussed. We also give a result on the nonlinear stability of an initial-boundary value problem for the Vlasov-Poisson equation.
