Faculty Frontiers Seminar

Faculty Frontiers is a seminar series that invites professors to present their research areas to students. It offers an engaging platform for students to explore diverse academic fields, learn about cutting-edge research, and interact with faculty members. The series aims to inspire curiosity, foster interdisciplinary connections, and enhance students’ understanding of various disciplines. This will be a monthly seminar.

Title: A naive approach to mixing

Speaker: Dr. Xiaoqian Xu (Duke Kunshan University)

Abstract

How do mathematicians understand the process of stirring a cup of coffee? How does this relate to the life of bacteria? In this session, I will introduce a quantitative way to define mixing, examples of mixing flows and its application to biology.

Bio:

Dr. Xu is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Duke Kunshan University. He received his BS in Mathematics (Prof. Shing-Tung Yau Honors class) from Zhejiang University, and his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2016). He did his postdoc research in Carnegie Mellon University and Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, Brown University from 2016 to 2019. Dr. Xu’s research interests are mathematical modeling of mixing in fluids and investigating the properties of solutions to some types of fluid mechanics equations. At Duke Kunshan University, his teaching interests include mathematical foundations and advanced courses in pure math.
