Title: The power of holonomic computation
Speaker: Christoph Koutschan
Bio: Christoph Koutschan is a Senior Researcher at the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM), of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He received his PhD in Symbolic Computation in 2009 under the supervision of Prof. Peter Paule. After positions at Tulane University (New Orleans, USA), the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC, Linz, Austria), and INRIA (Orsay, France), he joined RICAM in Linz. In 2016, he received the David P. Robbins Prize of the American Mathematical Society (together with Manuel Kauers and Doron Zeilberger).
He is author of about 80 publications in symbolic computation, and is known for his software package HolonomicFunctions.
Abstract: A central problem in symbolic computation is the exact and symbolic evaluation of integrals and sums. In this lecture, we explain the technique of creative telescoping, which was pioneered by Wilf and Zeilberger in the 1990s, to address such problems. Based on the concept of holonomic functions, i.e., functions satisfying a linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients, we demonstrate the power of this approach with selected applications from different areas of science.
